On one noted occasion in New Salem he faced the leader of the nearby Clary Grove gang , Jack Armstrong . After a prolonged struggle Lincoln was able to throw his opponent . The gang then backed Lincoln against the wall , threatening him, until Jack pushed them away , and shook Lincoln's hand .
