Lincoln was an accomplished frontier type wrestler , though he was beaten on occasion . On one noted occasion in New Salem he faced the leader of the nearby Clary Grove gang , Jack Armstrong . After a prolonged struggle Lincoln was able to throw his opponent . The gang then backed Lincoln against the wall , threatening him, until Jack pushed them away , and shook Lincoln's hand . The two were to become life long friends .
